I’m not sure the pope is much of cause in this case, more of an epiphenomenon. Only the most devout Catholics—of whom there are fewer every year—take seriously the pope’s (fairly long and boring) encyclical as any kind of guide. Leftish commentators who wouldn’t give any religious leader except an ayatollah the time of day are mostly wish-casting here.
