Freddie Sayers interviews reporter and documentary filmmaker Leighton Woodhouse for an on-the-ground account of the LA protests that followed ICE immigration raids. Woodhouse was in the thick of it—witnessing firsthand the violence, the escalation, and the crumbling of the “peaceful protest” narrative that dominated mainstream coverage. In this in-depth interview, he describes what it felt like to stand in the middle of what at times resembled “pre-civil war” more than a political demonstration. What began as outrage over immigration enforcement quickly spiraled into something much more chaotic. Leighton details the street-level reality: smashed windows, street fires, armed standoffs, and moments where the rule of law appeared to vanish. He challenges the media portrayal of events, questions the motives of protest leaders, and unpacks the deeper constitutional implications of what unfolded. Were these protests truly peaceful? Who was escalating the violence—and why? At what point does protest cross into insurrection? Is this unrest contained to Los Angeles and California, or will it spread, and become something more?
I have the highest regard for Freddie Sayers as an interviewer, but I have no idea why he chose this person for this topic. Woodhouse’s uneducated impressions and guesses are certainly of no interest to this subscriber. He spent all of a day in L.A. and he presumes to speak for the city, the state, the country, and motorists honking their horns northbound on 101! Completely useless interview.
I’ll offer an observation on the topic and a suggestion. It is absolutely necessary to do something about illegal immigration in the U.S., and impossible to do so. Perhaps Freddie Sayers can find someone to interview on why it is both necessary and impossible. To have two people presenting opposing views would be a waste of time. The interviewee should be capable of offending all sensibilities by simply telling the truth. It’s that kind of situation.
Freddy needs to get Victor Davis Hanson – the great intellectual from there, get some real truth. (He is the California equivalent to David Starkey)
Unfortunately that is not a good recommendation as David Starkey infamously ‘bottled it’ after a promising start.

You come in illegally and work in a low pay job as a deliveyy driver or labourer and you are magically transformed into part of ‘our comminity’, while any attemspt to enforce the Federal law is descibed as an an attack on them.
You have got to do better than this, I can get this guff for free at the Guardian or PBS.
So the undocumented immigrants have nothing to lose as they are not part of the democratic solution so that excuses their violence. Leighton, your state is disintigrating into violence so that people can get what they want no matter what the law says. You can’t have lawlessness and democracy.
What a shallow, superficial ramble. My grandmother on a regular shopping trip downtown would have come back with a more detailed, focused report, along with at least something of an analytical perspective based on evidence.
It is not rare for Immigrants to be arrested during scheduled appointments. It never has been, other than (possibly) during the Biden administration. Trump 45 did it, Obama did it, Bush did it, Clinton did it.
Also it is not true that California has always had the overwhelming population of Immigrants that it has now. California’s population was 90% Caucasian in 1990, and 75% Caucasian as later as 1980.
One fourth of California’s population is foreign born (legal and illegal). It was not always this way.
Sorry, should be California’s population was 90% Caucasian in 1970. It was 70% in 1990. It was reduced to 41% Caucasian by 2020. California has not “always been this way.”
