Germany’s economic death trap

December 24, 2025

Description

This week on a special Q&A edition of The Econoclasts, Yanis Varoufakis and Wolfgang Munchau confront the uncomfortable truths of 2025. From the economic death trap currently paralysing German society, to why nationalist parties like the AfD are sympathetic to Putin, America’s waning interest in NATO, and BRICS’s blockchain-based new world order – Yanis and Wolfgang look back on a year in which global values were rubbished.

  1. The so called ‘problem of ageing’ is a problem for the next 40 years or so as Europe and other advanced economies adjust to lower populations.
The idea that Europe or Japan, millennia in the making, should import tens of millions of poor badly educated immigrants from alien cultures and thereby permanently changing their demography to solve a temporary demographic problem is not only utter madness but a disgraceful betrayal of all those that went before us.
Let me offer a test to Yanis, would you support a program for the immigration of vast numbers of Turks into Greece to solve its ageing problem? Surely, only a xenophobe could object.
