The Econoclasts

Palantir's secret pact & the Euro's fatal flaw

November 12, 2025

Description

This week on The Econoclasts, Yanis Varoufakis and Wolfgang Munchau debunk two more establishment orthodoxies. First, Wolfgang challenges the widespread belief that the euro is a safe and permanent currency and investigates the deep structural flaws that were never fixed, exploring whether a new political shock in a major country like France could be the trigger that finally unravels the entire project. Next, Yanis shatters the foundational myth that capitalism is synonymous with free markets, exploring the cozy relationship between big business and the state, and questioning whether the ‘free market’ is just an ideological smokescreen. Is the system secretly designed to secure monopoly power, and will AI be a force for true competition, or will it be the ultimate weapon for existing tech giants to solidify their control forever?

  1. Oh dear. From the description think I will give Janice’s agitprop a miss. Heard it all before thanks.
Surely the only way that the Euro could have remedied its flaws would have been to replace the dollar. That is not going to happen now, it was a gamble. Do EU nations introduce parallel currencies ? They are too weak now.
To his eternal credit as head of Buba Helmut Schlesinger made the UK-Euro impossible and Brexit inevitable. It was only a matter of time

    1. Am I the only only commenter on here ? I hope that many more are listening to the Econoclasts. I know economy isn’t sexy, but for heavens sake European affairs and economic debate are more important than scoring ‘I told you so’ points on the wretched BBC. I despair of the Unherd herd sometimes.

  2. Nvidia is not the “largest” company, as Wolfgang asserts, it is the most valuable company by stock price. It is far from the biggest employer and maybe top 50 in annual revenue.
